Partial eclipse of Super Moon to be visible overnight

· RTE.ie

A partial lunar eclipse of a Super Moon will be visible across Ireland overnight.

The eclipse will last for just over an hour from 3.13am to 4.16am.

Astronomy Ireland said the mid eclipse will be around 3.44am when a "large dark 'bite' will be taken out of the Moon's top edge - this is the Earth's shadow in space crossing the lunar surface".

Astronomy Ireland said tonight's eclipse is especially rare as the full Moon is a Super Moon meaning the Moon is at its closest to Earth.

A Super Moon occurs when the Moon appears 30% brighter and 14% bigger in the sky.

Met Éireann is forecasting a dry night with mostly clear skies across the country.

"No equipment, just the naked eye, is needed to see the eclipse. But if you do have binoculars you will get a close up view" said Astronomy Ireland's David Moore.
